Fire SAFETY

This is of paramount importance to everyone living in or visiting the building. Prince Of Wales Mansions has an internal concrete stairwell that serves as the escape route in the event of a fire.  All apartment doors are provided by POWM Ltd and are fire resistant. Fire doors also separate different wings of the building on each floor. The building is fitted with an automatic fire alarm system   Residents and guest must exercise the utmost care and consideration in all matters relating to fire prevention.    Our insurance cover depends on everyone fulfilling their obligations, listed below:

  • Prince Of Wales Mansions is fitted with a new Automatic Fire Detection System. Heat sensors and sounders are located inside every apartment and in all common areas, which are all connected to a central alarm system. In the event of a fire, the alarm will sound and automatically dial a monitoring centre who will call out the fire service
  • In addition all apartments must also have a working smoke detector in the entrance lobby and the upstairs landing (duplex apartments only). Ideally a smoke detector should also be located in the kitchen but not directly above a source of smoke or steam such as a cooker or toaster
  • If residents and visitors hear the fire alarm, they must evacuate the building and congregate in the Assembly Area near the waste bins
  • Be sure you know the safest escape route – which, for all occupants except those in Windsor Court, is the internal fire-proof staircase.  Do not panic. Do not run.  Do not use the lifts.  If a Fire Marshal is present, please follow their guidance.
  • All fire doors MUST to kept closed at all times. Each apartment must have a smoke alarm (Tudor Court should have one on each floor) and a dry powder fire extinguisher.
  • Do not hesitate to raise the alarm if you have any suspicion of an outbreak of fire in any part of the building. This can be done by pressing the front of any of the red alarm boxes which are located on each floor by the side of the main staircase door, and at the doors to the internal fire-proof staircase
  • Gas appliances should be serviced annually by a qualified gas engineer
  • Smoking is strictly prohibited in all common areas of the building
  • Kitchen fires are one of the commonest risks in any household. Never throw water on an oil or fat fire
  • Never throw burning material or cigarette ends out of a window
  • Do NOT store inflammable items in your basement storage cubicle
  • Residents who are unable to use the stairs due to age or infirmity should seek temporary refuge at the eastern end of their own floors (nearest apartments numbered 1 - where the floors are concrete, and fire engines have access from the car park)
  • A Floor Plan is available to enable residents to walk the route and check how long it takes.  Copies of the floor plan are located by the lifts. If any resident needs clarification of escape routes or other related matters, they are to contact the Caretaker or a Director
