Harrogate became known as 'The English Spa' in the Georgian Era, after its waters were discovered in the 16th century. As a result the architecture of the town is almost uniformly Georgian and Victorian.
Prince Of Wales Mansions is just a short walk from the centre of this historic town with all its visitor attractions, restaurants and shops.
Built circa 1815, this important coaching inn was originally called Hattersley's. It was renamed The Brunswick Hotel in 1833, the same name being given to Harrogate's first railway station which remains underneath the Stray running diagonally opposite the building towards the Tewitt Well. In 1866 the name was changed to The Prince Of Wales Mansions.
The hotel was converted into apartments in 1960.
Prince Of Wales Mansions comprises 39 apartments. Over half the apartments are now leasehold with more planning to make the switch from freehold. All owners automatically become shareholders in POWM Ltd. The building is managed by a small group of resident owners who are appointed as directors of POWM Ltd. This enables the cost of maintenance to be minimised and also puts both day-to-day and strategic decision-making directly into the hands of the owners.
